Mapping Bogotá's Transit Network

In conjunction with ongoing work by the Urban Expansion team at the Marron Institute, “Mapping Bogotá's Transit Network” proposes to map Bogotá’s entire transit network. We will both collect existing data on the formal, centrally-operated system and develop new datasets on the informal, decentralized system. Our goal is to visualize the entire transit network and describe key operating characteristics, such as frequencies, costs, and speed. In most cities, transit agencies and government officials have detailed information on formal transit networks but virtually none on informal ones. This knowledge deficit makes it difficult to make smart investments in transport infrastructure, develop informed land-use plans, or anticipate potential points of friction within the network. To bring this network out of the shadows, we have established a strong working relationship with the Universidad del Rosario and the civic mapping community in Bogotá. Through these relationships we will go out into the city and map the unmapped portions of the system using a smartphone app and collect data on operating characteristics. Once we’ve collected this data, we will make a map that visualizes the entire network. With this data we can see the relationship between transit service and population, jobs, services, and shopping. This data will enable us to monitor UN Sustainable Development Goals, re-design the transit network, guide public and private investments, and identify areas of the city are underserved by transit.

This tool is meant to help us identify locations where informal transit stops are located throught the city. Right click on the map to add stops.
